Integrated Magnetic Choke Solutions for Compact Passive Electromagnetic Interference Filters

This paper proposes two novel integrated magnetic chokes, designed to reduce both the printed circuit board (PCB) area and volume of electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters. The common mode (CM) and differential mode (DM) inductance of the proposed integrated chokes, referred to as IC-1 and IC-2, are theoretically derived from the magnetic equivalent circuits and validated experimentally. In comparison to their respective conventional EMI filters, (i) the EMI filter with IC-1 offers a reduction in PCB area and volume by 17.2 % and (ii) the EMI filter incorporating IC-2 offers a reduction in PCB area and volume by 23 % and 10 %, respectively. Thus, the proposed integrated chokes serve as effective replacements for conventional CM chokes and DM inductors in dc EMI filters. Additionally, a comprehensive comparison of the proposed integrated chokes with the current state-of-the-art elucidates the advantages of the proposed chokes. The attenuation performance of the proposed integrated chokes is further demonstrated by testing on a hardware prototype of an isolated dual active bridge converter.
