Design and cutting performance of the cutting drum for shaft boring roadheader

The arrangement of conical picks on the cutting drum is a crucial aspect of the structural design of cutting drum, directly impacting the cutting performance. Firstly, this research analyzes the rock breaking load and the motion characteristics of the cutting drum, resulting in deducing the formula for calculating the overall load of the cutting drum in the reverse milling or the forward milling modes. Subsequently, drawing from the design method for the arrangement of conical picks in milling equipment, a cutting drum suitable for the Shaft boring roadheader (SBR) in hard rock stratum is designed. Finally, the method of finite element simulation is used to dynamically simulate the rock breaking process of the cutting drum. The cutting performance of the cutting drum under two working modes and various cutting thickness are studied, including the load, working power and specific energy. The research results indicate that the arrangement of conical picks on the cutting drum is suitable for sequential arrangement of single-headed spiral lines in hard rock strata. The resistance torque of forward milling mode is approximately 1.2 to 1.4 times higher than that of reverse milling mode, and the cutting power of reverse milling mode is approximately 9.6 % ∼ 23.7 % smaller than that of forward milling mode. The reverse milling mode is suitable for the cutting drum, with the cutting thickness not exceeding 200mm. These findings have a significant reference value for the design of the cutting drum.
