Opportunistic Sensing via ISAC-Capable RIS
We propose a design of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) elements that can toggle between ON (scattering the signal) and OFF (for sensing), with each element controlled by a binary state deployed to assist transmission towards a mobile user in an indoor environment. The study focuses on optimizing RIS configurations for maximizing received signal power for communication, while simultaneously evaluating the impact of these configurations on sensing performance. Analytical and simulation-based results show that even after optimizing for communication, a portion of RIS elements remains available for sensing, enabling dual functionality for RIS-assisted ISAC system with significantly lower complexity.
