Dynamic Time Warping Technique for Condition Monitoring of High Voltage Circuit Breakers

The reliability of high voltage circuit breakers (HVCBs) is crucial for power grid operation. Therefore, it is vital to monitor the condition of HV CBs accurately. One of the online condition monitoring measurements for HVCBs is the trip/close coil current measurement which is straightforward to implement. This paper presents a novel application of dynamic time warping (DTW) to compare healthy and defective trip/close coil current signals, facilitating the detection of defects in HVCB operation. DTW is used to assess the temporal variations between different signal patterns, providing a robust comparison even under varying operational conditions. An experimental HVCB setup is used to validate the proposed method, showcasing its capability to detect different types of faults in the coil mechanism.
