Impact of Hydrogen Storage and Flexible Load Management on Grid Emission Reduction

This study explores strategies for emission reduction in power systems by integrating hydrogen storage technologies and flexible load management to achieve a sustainable and low-carbon energy future. Hydrogen, as a versatile and clean energy carrier, offers significant potential for decarbonizing energy systems, particularly when paired with renewable energy sources. Flexible load management complements this by balancing supply and demand, improving resource utilization, and ensuring grid stability. The research proposes a mixed-integer programming model to co-optimize hydrogen and electrical energy resources, addressing the challenges of integrating distributed generation, hydrogen technologies, and flexible loads into modern power systems. Additionally, the study focuses on simulating load flexibility and the operational role of green hydrogen to enhance the efficiency of integrated network operations. Applied to the IEEE 39-bus test system, the proposed framework demonstrates its feasibility and effectiveness in minimizing emissions, reducing operational costs, and enhancing system flexibility. These findings provide valuable insights into integrating hydrogen-based systems and flexible load management as key components of future sustainable energy systems.
