Gain Enhanced Wide-Band Circular Patch Antenna for 5G n77 Band Using ENG Metasurface

This paper proposes a Metasurface Unit Cell (MUC) design with a negative permittivity in the entire n77 band (i.e., 3.3 GHz - 4.2 GHz). This <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$17\times 17$</tex> mm2MUC works like an Epsilon Negative Material (ENG), and it is deployed to improve the gain, return loss and front-to-back ratio of the microstrip patch antennas in the sub 6 GHz frequency range. An ultrawideband circular patch antenna with the truncated ground plane is used to conduct a detailed investigation and validate the performance of the proposed MUC. Nicolson-Ross-Weir (NRW) and the Robust Transmission Reflection (RTR) method are used to extract the permittivity of the MUC. The NRW and RTR approach reported an ENG bandwidth of 2.37 GHz for the proposed MUC. For the frequency band of interest, introducing the proposed MUC resulted in more than 100 % gain improvement for the reference antenna.
