Optical Filter Roll-off Analysis for Orthogonal Sampling in a Direct Detection System
A direct detection system requires a simple photodiode for the conversion from the optical to the electrical domain, only. However, orthogonal sampling is only possible in such systems if an optical filter is incorporated before the photodiode. Therefore, this paper investigates the dependence of the sampling quality on the roll-off factors of optical filters for an orthogonal sampling system based on a three-line frequency comb. The signal degradation is evaluated in terms of the root-meansquare error (RMSE), the signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD), and the effective number of bits (ENOB).
