Non-Contact Measurement of the Electromagnetic Properties of Metal Materials

Traditional methods of measuring the electric and magnetic properties of material are sometimes inaccurate or are too complicated and expensive to carry out. In light of all these, a single macroscopic, non-contact measurement is proposed in this paper which can measure the electric and magnetic properties of both non-magnetic and ferromagnetic metal materials. This measurement uses an RLC circuit driven by an alternating source and the results are calculated by collecting data ranging from 10 Hz to 300kHz. The accuracy of conductivity measurement was found to be greater than 85% after a comparison with the known value; the complex permeability measured was compared qualitatively to past research, proving the right trend. Overall, the innovative method presented in this paper offers a convenient, non-contact, and accurate way to measure the electrical properties of macroscopic metal rods, both ferromagnetic and non-magnetic. Also, the frequency dependence of the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials was detected, which also gives insight into the research of ferromagnetic material.
