The Decommissioning of Offshore Platforms in the Campos Basin and the Worsening Risks Caused by Corrosion
Objective: This research addresses the problem of corrosion in the structures of an FPSO-type offshore platform undergoing decommissioning, with the aim of evaluating the representativeness of the risks produced by the deterioration of the installation, with an emphasis on safety. Theoretical Framework: Data from Brazil's oldest oil and natural gas exploration and production basin, currently undergoing decommissioning, is considered, as well as information from other regions of the world that have experienced similar situations. In addition, the problem of corrosion is brought up as a cause of severe damage to the installation. Method: This study is qualitative and evaluative in nature, centred on the description and interpretation of data. The bibliographical research mainly covers the period from 2017 to 2023, supplemented by relevant previous works. Data on accidents was collected from Brazilian institutions and field research was carried out to identify potential risks generated by corrosive processes. Results and Discussion: The results indicate the intensification of risks in decommissioning units exposed to highly aggressive atmospheres, capable of jeopardising the safety of workers, installations and the environment, or even causing delays in the schedule or penalties. Research Implications: The risks associated with corrosion in decommissioning units have worsened, amplified by the reduction in manpower, the prioritisation of essential activities and extreme environmental conditions. Originality/Value: The study stands out for addressing the consequences of corrosion in offshore units undergoing decommissioning within Brazilian jurisdictional waters. It also discusses the impact on the structural integrity of the equipment and the growing risks for workers, the installation and the environment.
