Epidemiological Profile of Dogs Diagnosed with Third Eyelid Gland Prolapse (2007-2024) in Brazil
Objective: This study characterizes the population of dogs diagnosed with third eyelid gland prolapse at the Hospital de Clínicas Veterinárias of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (HCV-UFRGS), analyzing breeds, age, sex and the affected eye, with the aim of identifying possible predisposing factors and improving the epidemiological understanding of the condition. Theoretical Framework: The research is based on previous retrospective studies as well as reference books on veterinary ophthalmology. These sources provide a solid theoretical basis for understanding the condition and its relevance in clinical practice. Method: An analysis of the medical records of dogs diagnosed with third eyelid gland prolapse at HCV-UFRGS between 2007 and 2024 was performed, recording data such as breed, age, sex and affected eye. The data were organized into spreadsheets and analyzed statistically. Results and Discussion: The results revealed the prevalence of prolapse in mixed breed dogs and the Lhasa Apso and Shih Tzu breeds, in addition to a predominance in dogs up to one year of age, with no significant influence of sex and affected eye. Research Implications: The practical and theoretical implications of this research involve a better understanding of the predisposing factors of this condition, in addition to contributing to clinical practice and teaching of veterinary ophthalmology. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by offering a detailed characterization of the population of dogs affected by third eyelid gland prolapse, filling gaps regarding the predisposing factors of the condition in Brazil.
