SPEECH EFFECTS VERSUS WORLD-MODELING: ON THE CORRELATION OF CONCEPTS IN LINGUISTICS

The paper focuses on the correlation of the concepts of speech effects and world-modeling, as they have been actively worked out in the Russian linguistics since the beginning of this century. Both concepts prioritize the idea of imposing changes in the worldview and behavior of the addressee by means of the language. The absence of researches establishing a correlation of these concepts determines the relevance of this study. The objective of the author is to explain the similarities and differences in the interpretation of two terms and to identify areas of their application. The methodological basis of the research is constituted by pragmatics, cognitive poetics, cognitive linguistics, discourse studies. The notion of world-modeling is given more attention against the backdrop of what is traditionally known about the speech effects. The sample is formed by the contexts from literary works and 225 multimodal Telegram messages. The descriptive, discursive and multimodal analyses are used. It is argued that the concept of speech effects has evolved against the background of communicative and pragmatic paradigm of linguistics and the theory of speech acts, while the concept of world-modeling has a cognitive nature, which draws on the literary studies and cognitive linguistics. In the processes of world-modeling, the persuasive effect is realized due to the mental and linguistic structures, objectified by means of natural language and other semiotic codes. It is proved that the development of digital discourse has made communication more complex. It has stimulated the development of the concept of a multimodal world-modeling code. The notion emphasizes that verbal, non-verbal and paraverbal components can be co-activated to construct meaning in discourse. Kinematic, haptic, sensory, proximal, temporal, and paraverbal models of discourse impact organization on Telegram have been described. It is specified that in the processes of world-modeling, the impact on the addressee is carried out on the basis of emotional cognitive structures and image representation. The research contributes to the development of the metalanguage of linguistics, the problems of digital discourse and the multimodal communication.
