Worshyp and Noyse : Emotional Communities and Chivalric Identity in Malory's Morte Darthur

Abstract: Bound by social, familial, and feudal obligations, but impelled by personal desire, Malory forms his knights' reputation and identity by an affective exchange between individual and community. Malory's text demonstrates the complicated relationship between individual identity, public reputation, and gossip through his narrativization of worshyp and noyse —medieval concepts similar to, yet distinct from, reputation and gossip.
