Visualization of the 2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquakes Using the Yandex Maps

The article presents a method for visualizing the acquired seismic data on the Turkey-Syria earthquakes registered on February 6, 2023 on the interactive map. The source of the earthquake data in the Comma-Separated Values (CSV) format is the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). Once received, the data are converted from the CSV to the JSON using the provided Python program. For each earthquake, information on the geographic coordinates, time, and magnitude is written in the JSON file with the each magnitude range being represented by the corresponding color. The generated JSON files are used to display the earthquakes in the Yandex Maps, and the article also provides the corresponding JavaScript and HTML codes for generating the maps. The resulting maps with the earthquakes of varying intensity are presented, and a link to the web pages developed as the study result is provided. The article would be useful for specialists studying the earthquakes, as well as for the students, as an example of data visualization.

Abstract

The article presents a method for visualizing the acquired seismic data on the Turkey-Syria earthquakes registered on February 6, 2023 on the interactive map. The source of the earthquake data in the Comma-Separated Values (CSV) format is the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). Once received, the data are converted from the CSV to the JSON using the provided Python program.
