Adaptive Urban Greenhouses

Urban living often limits access to spaces conducive to plant growth, leading to challenges in fostering sustainable green environments. To address this, we introduce the Adaptive Urban Greenhouse (AUG), a compact, robotic, and modular form designed to optimize plant cultivation in restricted urban spaces. AUG adapts to diverse locations, weather conditions, and daily cycles, ensuring ideal growth environments. The specific design goal is to enhance urban agricultural practices by integrating adaptive technologies with constrained living environments. This paper outlines the research-through-design (RtD) process of AUG, tracing its development stages and evaluating its performance through user studies. We conducted user studies to identify potential pain points within our model, designing and formatting our questions around the “usability scale” to assess the intuitiveness and user-friendliness of our final product. The results demonstrated that our design was both easy to use and intuitive, validating the effectiveness of our form.
