Power Transformer Inrush Current: Mitigation Strategies Using Diesel Generators and Soft Starters
The initiation of power transformers (PTs) is essential for the stability of electrical networks, often leading to magnetizing inrush currents (MICs). These currents can significantly impact voltage levels, largely influenced by the ratio of generation capacities to the capacities of the energized PTs. To mitigate these voltage drops and ensure the network operates reliably, the implementation of effective surge protection and management strategies is crucial. This study explores two effective approaches for mitigating MICs in PTs: the implementation of emergency diesel generators (EDGs) and the application of soft starter system (SFS). The research utilizes technical specifications from Brush and Leroy-Somer generators, and ABB transformers, employing EMTP-RV software for simulation and analysis. The results offer important insights for the design of electrical power systems (EPSs), highlighting strategies to reduce MICs in PTs. These methods enhance system stability and provide essential protection for equipment during startup procedures.
