Practical Guide for End Users: Up-Tower Wind Generator Onsite Rotor Lead Identification

The rapid growth of the wind energy sector has made generator availability and reliability increasingly critical. When a wind generator is offline during wind availability, operators face significant revenue losses, and traditional generator removal for testing or repairs is costly and time-consuming. To address this challenge, the wind generator repair industry has developed specialized up-tower testing methods, enabling field service technicians to diagnose issues without removing the generator. This paper presents a step-by-step procedure for identifying rotor leads on double-fed induction generators (DFIGs) and wound rotor induction generators (WRIGs) onsite, using standard test equipment. By eliminating the need for generator removal, this approach significantly reduces downtime, enhances service efficiency, and allows wind farm owners and technicians to perform first-line diagnostics quickly and effectively.
