Recovery of Cerebral Hemodynamic and Metabolic Changes via Cytochrome C Oxidase and Near Infrared Spectroscopy

Currently, there are no standard algorithms or clinical methods for simultaneously monitoring cerebral blood flow and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen without significant complexities and inconsistencies. Existing techniques often depend on indirect measurements or lack real-time data, which can lead to inaccuracies in assessing brain function. This gap creates challenges for researchers and clinicians in evaluating brain condition, especially in cases of ischemia, where distinguishing between impaired oxygen consumption and inadequate blood supply is crucial for treatment decisions and prognosis. This article addresses this issue by developing regression algorithms for simultaneous evaluation of cerebral blood flow and metabolic rate of oxygen using only near-infrared spectroscopy. By linking the concentration of oxygenated cytochrome c oxidase with the metabolic rate, the study explores how to differentiate contributions of these two factors based on measurements. The feasibility of this approach was demonstrated under normal conditions and discussed in relation to Alzheimer's disease.
