Enhancing Voltage Stability in PV/Wind Power Systems with STATCOM Utilizing Fuzzy Controller

As fossil fuels deplete, electricity demand rises, and environmental concerns escalate, renewable energy sources (RES) have become increasingly important. Integrating renewables into power systems significantly impacts grid performance, including nuclear installations, heavy industries, and hospitals. Addressing transient performance issues remains a critical area that requires further investigation. This paper explores the deployment of a Static Synchronous Compensation Device (STATCOM) utilizing a controller based on fuzzy logic (FLC) to tackle voltage stability issues in the IEEE nine-bus system, specifically considering the incorporation of Photovoltaic (PV) and Wind energy. A virtual simulation is performed utilizing MATLAB/Simulink with both a Proportional Integrative (PI) controller and an FLC controller for the STATCOM under different conditions to highlight the variation that the offered STATCOM presents concerning transient stability. The study aims to illustrate the effectiveness of FLC over the PI controller for enhancing system stability at different locations using the STATCOM device. The results indicate that STATCOM contributes a better response through FLC under abnormal conditions compared to the PI controller.
