Compact Mode-Division Multiplexer Using Inverse Design With Direct Binary Search Method and Thermo-Optic Effect

We propose a compact switchable mode-division-multiplexer based on inverse-design using thermo-optic phase-shifters and multimode-interferometer (MMI). The results demonstrate that arbitrary mode conversion from TE<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> to TE<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> to TE<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf> can be achieved.

Abstract

We propose a compact switchable mode-division-multiplexer based on inverse-design using thermo-optic phase-shifters and multimode-interferometer (MMI). The results demonstrate that arbitrary mode conversion from TE<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> to TE<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> to TE<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf> can be achieved.
