Creating free-space beams with metamaterial engineered optical antennas

Emerging applications, including gas sensing or optical trapping, require beams collimated over centimeter-scale distances. We experimentally demonstrate the first silicon-on-insulator antenna that generates beams with a Rayleigh length of 6.2 cm. The device achieves a 54 % radiation efficiency with feature sizes compatible with deep-UV lithography.

Abstract

Emerging applications, including gas sensing or optical trapping, require beams collimated over centimeter-scale distances. We experimentally demonstrate the first silicon-on-insulator antenna that generates beams with a Rayleigh length of 6.2 cm. The device achieves a 54 % radiation efficiency with feature sizes compatible with deep-UV lithography.
