Analysis of Primary Energy Consumption Forecasts in the Short and Medium Term for Russia

In this paper, it is reviewed scenarios for the decarbonization of the Russian economy prepared by several leading Russian institutions, identifies key energy efficiency indicators, and identifies the most promising strategic goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The relevance is related to the fact that the issues of reducing the carbon footprint occupy an important place in the Russian climate agenda. The aim of the study is to analyze the instruments for regulating greenhouse gas emissions and mechanisms for the transition to energy with an assessment of the potential for their use in Russia in the short and medium term. It is determined that the most significant sector in terms of greenhouse gas emissions can definitely be called energy, since it accounts for about 80% of total greenhouse gas emissions in Russia, which is equivalent to more than 1.6 billion tons of C02-eq. per year. It has been established that the task of decarbonization of the energy sector is currently becoming more and more obvious, and the stated goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 can only be achieved through a balanced modernization of the main equipment of energy-intensive industries.
