Leveraging Architectural Redundancy for High Contrast Nulling with Photonic Meshes

We present a triangular mesh of dual-Mach Zehnder Interferometers (DMZIs) for high-sensitivity sensing applications. This architecture significantly enhances the achievable extinction ratio of a photonic integrated circuit (PIC), exceeding 80 – dB. This is made possible by added circuit complexity which simultaneously compensating for fabrication errors and other non-idealities such as back reflections within the circuit.

Abstract

We present a triangular mesh of dual-Mach Zehnder Interferometers (DMZIs) for high-sensitivity sensing applications. This architecture significantly enhances the achievable extinction ratio of a photonic integrated circuit (PIC), exceeding 80 – dB. This is made possible by added circuit complexity which simultaneously compensating for fabrication errors and other non-idealities such as back reflections within the circuit.
