Discrete Wavelet Transform Approach for Reliable Fault Detection in Series Compensated Transmission Lines

The addition of a series compensator (SC) to a long transmission line enhances both transient and steady-state stability. However, traditional distance relaying techniques face challenges in protecting such series-compensated lines. To address this, this paper introduces a reliable approach for fault detection and classification in series-compensated lines. The proposed method utilizes a Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) analysis on three-phase current to detect faults and identify their types. The performance of this method is evaluated using a two-machine 400 kV, 50 Hz series-compensated transmission line model, developed in MATLAB/Simulink, under various power system conditions such as changing fault locations, fault resistance, and fault inception angles.
