Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Student Learning in Oman

The main aim of this study was to evaluate the benefits and challenges of adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for student learning in higher educational institutions in Oman. A survey was administered, and data was collected from 107 respondents. The highest mean score for the benefits of AI tools for student learning from the students' perspective was that AI tools quickly responded to questions within seconds (4.465). Similarly, the highest mean score for the challenges of using AI tools for student learning and assessments was for bias and fairness issues with the information: Sometimes it carries out biases towards certain topics, places, and people (4.371). Chat GPT was the most commonly used AI tool (22%) by the respondents for their learning and assessment. The other popular AI tools used by the respondents were Grammarly (14%), Quill Bot, and Google Gemini (11%). However, 63.5% of the respondents were unsure whether to trust the information generated by AI tools. The findings indicate that there is a strong relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) usage and students' engagement and academic performance but a weak relationship between AI usage and student learning, implying that AI usage did not translate into student learning.
