Current Experience and Prospects for the Use of Energy Storage Systems in the Russian Federation

Power systems around the world actively use electrical energy storage systems (ESS). Currently, Russia is developing normative and technical documentation with the introduction of the first pilot projects of ESS. This article reviews the technical features of various types of electricity storage subsystems to assess the feasibility of their application in the Russian Federation. The article provides information on innovative projects related to the inclusion of ESS in the energy systems of Russia and other countries of the world. Based on the analysis of the introduced normative and technical documents concerning ESS and trends in the future development of electricity storage technologies, the authors come to the conclusion that changes are necessary. This will speed up the process of project implementation and increase the economic effect from the introduction of ESS.
