Photovoltaic Integration on Distribution Networks: Harmonic Mitigation with Passive Filters

The integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems has become crucial for modern power generation, offering significant environmental and technical benefits. However, high penetration of PV systems into electricity distribution grids can present operational challenges, including reverse power flow, voltage fluctuations, and harmonic distortions. This paper investigates the impact of PV energy systems and static nonlinear loads (NLLs) on grid performance, with a focus on power quality, voltage stability, and harmonic mitigation. The study uses single-tuned passive filters (STPF) as a solution to reduce harmonic distortions caused by nonlinear loads, thereby enhancing overall power quality. A detailed simulation of the PV distribution grid, incorporating both PV systems and static loads, is conducted using ETAP software to assess system performance under different operational scenarios. The findings highlight the need for effective integration strategies to ensure grid stability and power quality in the presence of renewable energy sources and NLLs.
