Iot-Empowered Innovative Smart Cane for the Visually Impaired Individuals
The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 2.2 billion people globally experience some form of visual impairment, highlighting the significant impact on daily life. This project addresses the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals by developing an advanced smart cane equipped with IoT technology. The research delves into the operational concepts behind smart canes, particularly focusing on models utilizing Arduino Uno technology. The developed smart cane is created at 110 cm to suit the average Indian height, the solid model determines the final outlook of the setup and is then programmed accordingly on the Arduino UNO software. The final outlook integrates an Arduino UNO microcontroller, ultrasonic and LiDAR sensors, GPS and GSM modules, a raindrop sensor, a vibrating motor for deaf users which provides a dua-alert mechanism, and other components to detect obstacles, measure distances, and provide feedback through buzzers and vibrations. Key specifications include a 12V 9A battery, 1080p IP camera, and various ergonomic materials such as silicon and foam sheets. A PVC transparent sheet protects the sensor unit, and recycled CPVC is used for the cane's body to reduce costs and enhance sustainability. The smart cane's features, including an emergency button for sending location data via GPS, significantly improve mobility and safety for visually impaired users. This project aims to empower individuals and promote inclusivity through innovative and sustainable technological solutions. This paper concludes with the output of the setup and questionnaire results and the best possible solutions to overcome difficulties illustrated in future scope.
