Modelling of Five Level Asymmetric Inverter based DSTATCOM for Power Quality Enhancement using Optimized FOPTI-FOPTID Controller

This paper addresses the growing power quality challenges in distribution systems stemming from nonlinear loads and power electronic devices, by introducing a novel five-level asymmetrical multilevel inverter (MLI) based Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM). Unlike conventional approaches, our design minimizes switch and DC source count, enhancing system simplicity and efficiency. To optimize the MLI's switching pulses, we implemented a cascaded fractional-order proportional Tilt integral (FOPTI) and fractional-order proportional Tilt integral Derivative (FOPTID) controller, finely tuned using the Enhanced Pufferfish Optimization Algorithm (EPOA). Simulation results, generated in MATLAB/Simulink, validate the effectiveness of our approach, demonstrating the MLI's ability to achieve five distinct voltage levels. Notably, our optimized DSTATCOM significantly improves power quality, achieving a total harmonic distortion (THD) of 3.96% while maintaining a high system efficiency of 98%. This research presents a substantial advancement in DSTATCOM design, offering a practical solution for enhancing power quality in modern distribution grids.
