Soft-Starting of BLDC Motor with Model Predictive Control for Electric Vehicles using STM32
This work introduces a soft-starting method for a Brushless DC Motor (BLDCM) based on a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) and Model Predictive Control (MPC). The designed configuration successfully removes initial inrush currents and high starting torque. MPC provides accurate speed control by slowly raising the voltage fed to the VSI, which decreases the switching stress on the inverter. Consequently, the VSI switches handle lower frequencies, greatly reducing switching losses. The system's performance is analyzed on the MATLAB-Simulink platform for ensuring a thorough and credible analysis. Moreover, MPC provides a smooth rise in voltage during abrupt load changes, constantly updating according to iterative predictions to result in stable and controlled voltage waveforms.
