Bridging Intuition and Data: A Dynamic Framework for IPL Player Valuation
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league. As part of the team formation for this league players are sold to teams through a competitive auction, often fetching high prices that may not reflect their performance—or surprisingly low ones despite their talent, for various factors. The auctions as of now, are conducted primarily based on intuition and on manual performance analysis. This paper proposes a comprehensive framework that transcends conventional performance indicators by integrating additional factors such as player fitness, availability, adaptability to different formats, social media influence, and global marketability. The objective is to address the lack of a robust player valuation model by systematically aligning team requirements with a player’s overall value. The proposed framework facilitates accurate monetary valuation of players both prior to and dynamically during the auction process, enhancing decision-making and fostering fairness in team formation.
