Abstract

Relative differential cross sections are presented for the formation of deuterons in the two competing processes from the reactions: Li6(p,d)Li5 and Li6(p,pd)He4.For the pick-up process leading to the ground state of LiJ results are available for laboratory angles from 10 to 60 degrees. The shape of the spectrum clearly favors an = 1 orbital for the picked-up neutron. The second reaction, which leads to a continuous spectrum has been observed for laboratory angles from 15 tc 90 degrees. This continu ous spectrum is attributed almost entirely to the very broad 3.82 Mev first excited level of Li^.Its measured average energy of 3.89 ^O.lOMev corresponds to an excited state of Li^ at 3.72 0.10 Mev, with a full width r estimated to be 6.3 * 0.5 Mev.A small "peak" at low energies was attributed to a contribution from the next exci ted level of Li'' at 16.64 Mev.The integrated relative cross section ^ (0) for the latter process seems to exhibit symmetry about CM 90 degrees in the center of mass system, from 60 to 113, and both processes exhibit absolute maxima at the same forward angles: 0, , = 22.5 0.5.LabLaboratories Electronics Shop, the Columbia University Shop and particularly to Mr. Ray Pietranico who built the scattering chamber.I also thank Mr. Henry Dowds
