Stigma and resilience analyzing the socio-psychological impact on guardians of illegal substance abusers admitted to the Rehab centres in Bangladesh
Exploring socio-psychological impact of stigma and resilience strategies of guardians of illegal substance abusers admitted to Bangladesh rehabilitation centers. Data were collected using structured surveys, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and case studies employing a mixed-methods approach, which yielded responses from 450 guardians. The results show that most guardians face three types of stigmas- social, institutional, and internalized- which have significant effects on their mental health, emotional stability, and social relationships. Even in facing these challenges, many caregivers embody resilience through coping that is deeply embedded in cultural, spiritual, and communal practices. “Guardians are not a formal part of the mental health and rehabilitation systems, which might reflect structural limitations,” the study authors wrote. In accordance with the obtained evidence, the study suggests policies with a familial focus of rehabilitation, psychological counseling of caregivers and stigma-reduction approaches to establish a more comprehensive rehabilitative environment. These insights help to gain an understanding of the invisible challenges and received wisdom of guardians, providing potential in roads to implementing substance abuse treatments in Bangladesh that are more effective, compassionate, and long-lasting in nature.
