Strategic Approaches Towards the Development of Fluorobenzotriazole‐Based Donor Polymers for Solar Cell Application

ABSTRACT Polymer solar cells (PSCs) have recently received great interest due to their unique features, which include cost‐effective fabrication, higher flexibility, and remarkable visible light absorption. Fluorobenzotriazole (FBTA) is a promising acceptor unit for the synthesis of polymers for organic solar cells, which provides increased backbone planarity, crystallinity, and improved π–π stacking. To date, several polymers have been synthesized with FBTA as the electron‐accepting unit, and benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT), benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]difuran (BDF), polythiophenes, and so forth, as the electron‐donating group. This review provides a synopsis of the development of donor polymers based on FBTA as an electron‐accepting unit unleashing their structural impact on modulating the optoelectronic, electrochemical, and photovoltaic performance of PSCs together with the forthcoming opportunities and challenges in the FBTA‐based polymers in PSCs.
