BIM-GIS integration for efficient management of urban underground stormwater networks
Stormwater drains are essential components of urban infrastructure, responsible for managing excess rainwater and reducing flood risks, especially during heavy or irregular rainfall. In fast-growing cities like Chennai, rapid urbanization and unpredictable monsoons often overwhelm existing drainage systems, leading to frequent urban flooding and waterlogging. These challenges are compounded by the limitations of traditional two-dimensional (2D) planning methods, which lack the spatial and structural detail needed for effective management. This study proposes an integrated approach combining building information modelling (BIM) and geographic information systems (GIS) to enhance the efficiency and resilience of stormwater network planning. BIM provides detailed three-dimensional (3D) models of drainage infrastructure, while GIS adds geospatial context, supporting improved analysis and decision-making. A BIM-GIS integration framework is developed and applied to a selected urban ward in Chennai. Simulation within the BIM environment is used to assess the model’s performance in terms of data accessibility, visualization, and coordination. The findings highlight enhanced information flow and stakeholder engagement, enabling better flood preparedness and infrastructure planning. This integrated approach aligns with Sustainable Development Goals—SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities)—by promoting smarter, more sustainable urban solutions.
