The norm-setting dynamics of institutions and artificial intelligence: quality of care and efficiency in social work

Rapid technological advancements will impact individuals’ living conditions and social relationships, introducing new challenges for social work practice and research. This article explores various ethical and philosophical perspectives on this development. The article explores the standards of quality and efficiency in public service care, along with the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) systems on practical social work. Its purpose is to provide a thorough understanding, encompassing the ethical considerations pertinent to the field. By employing Mary Douglas’s theories on institutional categorisation processes, it emphasises the normative influences that shape social work practices and the implications of using AI systems. The article concludes that AI could create new opportunities for enhancing social work. However, there are reasons to proceed with caution, as our understanding of the implications of this development remains limited. It seems reasonable to assume that AI may be beneficial for managing technical quality. Yet, concerning relational and functional quality, it appears more uncertain what AI can contribute to delivering high-quality care.
