Using GIS and remote sensing techniques for morphometric and hydrological analysis of the Babil River watershed in Iraq

Actually, the morphological features and basin appearances of the Babil River were analyzed in this study using Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) techniques based on digital elevation model (DEM) data. An essential component of watershed planning is the quantified description of the evacuation system provided by morphometric studies. The formula proposed by Horton and Strahler has been used for estimating the evacuation map and the morphometric variables, including the no. of the basin, area, perimeter, no. of order, sum no. of streams, stream frequency, longest flow path, maximum width, and longest flow path density of the watershed. The results led to plan seven sub of basins were planning and five, four and three order of streams for everyone, the stream frequency of the seven sub of basins to be 0.27, 0.26, 0.26, 0.26, 0.32, 0.28 and 0.25 sum total/km2 with area 1262.00, 850.89, 554.10, 275.17, 272.17, 261.27 as well as 126.12 km2 (respectively). The basin 1 includes longest flow path 54.76 km with a density 0.04 as five orders flows towards east, 49.55 km and 0.06 as four orders flows towards northeast for basin 2, 38.06 and 0.07 as four orders for basin 3 flows towards the southeast. 18.38 km and 0.07 as four orders flows southwest for basin 4, 14.19 km and 0.05 as four orders flows towards southwest for basin 5, 23.69 km and 0.09 as three orders flows towards northeast for basin 6 and 17.11 km and 0.14 as two orders flows towards southeast for basin 7.

Actually, the morphological features and basin appearances of the Babil River were analyzed in this study using Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) techniques based on digital elevation model (DEM) data.
