REDUCTION OF NITROGEN OXIDES EMISSION THROUGH STAGED AIR SUPPLY IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER OF AN AMMONIA-FUELED GAS TURBINE ENGINE

The study focuses on evaluating the potential of using gaseous ammonia for decarbonized hybrid energy systems with gas turbine engines. The primary goal is to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions in the combustion chamber of a gas turbine engine operating on gaseous ammonia by introducing staged air supply along the length of the combustion liner. The research object is the operational processes within the combustion chamber of a high-powered gas turbine engine fueled by pure ammonia.Based on a developed reactor model, which solves differential equations of mass and energy conservation for a chemically reacting system, rational design parameters of the combustion chamber are selected. These parameters determine the nature of the staged air supply along the length of the combustion liner. The kinetic scheme of ammonia burning in the gas turbine engine's combustion chamber is based on a hightemperature ammonia oxidation mechanism, comprising 160 chemical reactions with 27 species.New data have been obtained regarding the formation of nitrogen oxides in the high-powered combustion chamber under varying air supply configurations along the liner.Optimal combustion chamber parameters have been identified, minimizing emissions of toxic components compared to the baseline fuel-burning design. The combustion chamber's operational process calculations were performed at a pressure of 2.0 MPa for six different schemes of primary and secondary air supply along the combustion liner.Dependencies of toxic nitrogen oxide emissions and gas outlet temperature on the air excess ratio were demonstrated. The results of this study can be applied to the practical design of combustion chambers for gas turbine engines operating on alternative fuels.
