Opportunities and vulnerabilities arising from the introduction of AI technologies in mental healthcare

Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into psychiatry raises significant ethical, legal and social challenges. Although AI has the potential to improve assessments and predictions in mental health, its use depends on the quality and representativeness of the data, with the risk of algorithmic bias and exacerbation of social inequalities. In forensic psychiatry, AI predictions of deviant behavior require a rigorous ethical and legal framework. Data privacy is a major concern as AI handles sensitive information, and regulations may not keep pace with technological developments. In addition, reliance on AI could affect the direct doctor-patient interaction that is essential in medical and especially psychiatric treatment. The lack of standardization and adequate education for mental health professionals may create barriers to implementing AI technologies. Responsible integration requires a collaborative effort between researchers, clinicians and policy makers, ensuring the use of artificial intelligence for the benefit of patients and maintaining the integrity of the psychiatric care system. Public and professional awareness can lead to a process of integration that ultimately results in increased well-being of individuals and communities.
