Social Media and Virtual Communities: Investigating Digital Engagement, Social Problem Management, and Economic Mobility
Social media today exerts a significant influence on human life. It serves as a platform for connecting and managing the lives of its users. Social media has significantly transformed modern communication, becoming integral to how individuals engage with societal issues, satisfy emotional needs, and pursue economic development. This study examines how digital engagement within virtual communities contributes to these three dimensions, using a quantitative survey of 374 active social media users in Malaysia. The research employs statistical analysis to assess the impact of digital interactions on individuals' social and economic well-being. Findings reveal that while social media facilitates community cohesion and economic opportunities, challenges such as digital literacy gaps and algorithmic biases persist. The study’s insights offer valuable contributions to the discourse on digital engagement and its societal implications, emphasizing the need for enhanced platform governance and inclusive digital policies. These findings underscore the transformative potential of social media in fostering social equity, making this research a significant addition to contemporary discussions on digital engagement and community well-being.
