The Impact of Performance Indicators on Match Outcomes in the 22nd FIFA World Cup
The FIFA World Cup represents the most influential sporting event globally, and an in-depth analysis of World Cup teams' performance characteristics holds significant practical implications for tactical and physical conditioning guidance of Chinese football teams. This study examined 32 teams participating in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, analyzing data from 64 matches through tests of normal distribution and homogeneity of variance, employing one-way ANOVA and Fisher's discriminant analysis to investigate the impact of teams' tactical and physical performance on match outcomes. Research variables included match outcomes (49 wins, 30 draws, 49 losses) and performance metrics encompassing shooting, attacking, defending, and physical indicators from each match. Results indicate, (i) tactically, winning teams demonstrated significantly higher numbers of shots on target compared to drawing and losing teams (p<0.05, \({\eta }^2\)=0.091 and 0.143). Attacking indicators showed no significant differences. Drawing teams exhibited higher numbers of second ball recoveries compared to winning and losing teams (p<0.05, η²=0.14 and 0.069), (ii) physically, drawing teams showed significantly higher total distance covered and high-speed running distances compared to winning and losing teams (p<0.05, \({\eta }^2\)=0.214, 0.236 and 0.142, 0.120), (iii) discriminant analysis revealed variables with high discriminatory power included total distance covered and forced turnovers, primarily concentrated in defensive and movement indicators. The study concludes that winning teams significantly outperformed drawing and losing teams in shot quality, while drawing teams demonstrated superior defensive and physical performance compared to both winning and losing teams, indicating that drawn matches featured teams of comparable strength. The research also suggests that disparities in team capability may lead to relatively fewer passes and running distances. For coaches, while emphasizing shot quality in offensive organization, attention should also be paid to defensive aspects to prevent tactical imbalance.
