Technical and Tactical Analysis of the Men's Singles Table Tennis Final between Fan Zhendong and Truls Moregardh at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games Based on Computer Video Analysis

In the present work, the technical and tactical performance of two table tennis players—Fan Zhendong and Truls Moregardh in the men's singles final in the 2024 Olympic Games was analyzed to identify the two players’ offensive playing tactics and provide professional insights to help the preparation for the next Olympic Games in 2028. Specifically, professional high-speed cameras with built-in software was employed to parse their attacking movements and the technical & tactical analysis model was combined to identify their attacking characteristics. Besides, the effectiveness of the techniques and tactics they used in the competition were also investigated. Compared with the traditional method that combined video observations and manual statistics, our work made a study case on the competition between Fan Zhendong and Truls Moregardh to obtain detailed and dynamic information about their respective techniques and tactics, as well as their strengths and weaknesses, thereby providing a reference for both the coaches and the players on the Chinese male table tennis team to get better prepared for the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
