Sparse voxel transformer BEV for LIDAR-based 3D object detection
There are three major challenges that LiDAR based 3D object detection methods have. They include: processing of sparse point clouds and effective acquisition of long-range contextual information. This research proposes a new Sparse Voxel Transformer Lidar-Base (SVT-LIDAR) framework that seeks to address these limitations using a dual-attention approach. We describe in detail two types of attention reach other - Local Attention and Diluted Attention – and together they enable long-range interaction within voxels but at the same time remain efficient in computation. The proposed framework combines sparse voxel modules and submanifold voxel modules for addressing the irregularities in point clouds while still retaining its volumetric features. The architecture employs a transformer encoder with multi-head attention and feedforward networks that help optimize the input received from the sparse voxel grid. Our approach marks a new edge in performance in crimes detection on KITTI test, having Average Precision (AP) at possible best margin, approximately 88.13%, 80.10%, and 76.59 at Easy, Moderate, and Hard situations 40 recall based on positions respectively. These results exhibit significant advancements compared to current methodologies like PillarNeXt and PDV, especially in difficult situations with partial occlusions and fluctuating point cloud densities. Most systems may find such a framework to be a useful addition, especially robotics and autonomous driving systems which require detailed rendering of 3D objects. Our results show that a good blending of local and dilated attention techniques enhances the performance of the model considerably while maintaining the efficient use of resources.
