Can sustainability and paramedic practice co-exist?
This work identified core themes relevant to environmental sustainability in current emergency paramedic practice. It is argued here that a paradigm shift in overarching governance and policy is needed to support and enable increased awareness, recognised relevance and dialectical thinking in relation to environmental issues for practitioners. Additionally, from the literature reviewed, use of reusable devices instead of plastic is identified as requiring careful consideration and, indeed, this thinking is already finding a voice in the wider Greener NHS programme. Furthermore, targeting the reduction of greenhouse gases remains an ongoing important mission.
