An Integrated Optical Mobile Communication and Sensing System for Hovering UAVs

Integrated optical wireless communication and sensing scheme for the hovering civil unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will play an important role in the future wireless networks. In this paper, an integrated optical mobile communication and sensing system with user mobility for hovering UAVs is proposed, which employs the power division multiplexing method to share the same beamsteering device for both communication and sensing. To support mobility, we consider new challenges including the selection of the proper beam waist, the power allocation between sensing and communication, and the adjustment time of spatial light modulator (SLM). The ergodic achievable rate (EAR) is investigated, and the optimization problem to achieve the maximum EAR is solved. Besides, the EARs for different user speeds and different adjustment time of SLM are analyzed by numerical results. Simulation results show that the EAR of the proposed system is higher than conventional schemes with fixed power allocation, and close to the free-space optical communication scheme in the ideal case.
