Mapping Segregation and Localization Using Google Point of Interest

Segregation plays an important role in studying urban problems. In the last few years, Ireland has seen huge migration and tourist attraction from all over the world, and migrants have settled in all cities, especially Dublin, the capital city of the country. Census data usually is used to map segregation, but they do not provide detailed data on nationality and activities, and they are aggregated at census tracts. Point of interest (POI) data is useful for retrieving useful information along with the location of citizens and visitors, which plays a vital role in social research. This research studied the capability of POI data to map the spatial pattern of segregation of activity which can be a tourist or citizen. First, the possible gender and nationality of Google POI reviewers were identified using the NamSor platform. After that DBSCAN classification model is used to find the pattern of reviewers with possible US citizens' activity in the Dublin metropolitan area. The results show several clusters of US citizens based on their gender in the city. The outputs of this research can help social researchers and urban planners better understand the city's underlying sociospatial processes.
