Inferring Surface Melt Variability Over Amery Ice Shelf Using Radar Backscatters from Scatterometer and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Sensor
This work analyzes radar backscatters from Ku-band Indian scatterometer (SCATSAT-1) and C-band SAR sensor (Sentinel-1) to determine surface melt variations across Amery ice shelf. Annual melt duration, intensity, and onset day were calculated using SCATSAT-1 for 2017-2021. Sentinel-1 melt variability signatures were also studied across selected ice shelf locations. Regional and inter-annual melting variability over the ice shelf has been observed. The 2019–20 melt season had the longest duration and highest intensity, whereas 2020–21 had the earliest melt onset (1-15 Nov) but the lowest intensity. Low ice volume fraction and high surface melting were observed over the highly crevassed eastern part of the ice shelf.
