Enhanced Distribution Network Restoration Using Tabu Search with Load Prioritization
This paper presents a Tabu Search-based optimization framework designed for restoring service in electrical distribution networks following a fault. The primary goal is to maximize load restoration while minimizing the number of switch operations necessary to isolate and recover from a faulted section. A priority-based restoration scheme is incorporated to prioritize critical loads, such as hospitals and emergency services, using a weighted restoration approach. Upon the occurrence of a fault, the affected branch is isolated, and the Tabu Search algorithm identifies feasible switching configurations that restore power without reconnecting the faulted branch. The proposed method is tested on both a modified IEEE 33-bus distribution network and a real-world network operated by the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) in Ubonratchathani, Thailand. In the IEEE network, distributed generation (DG) units are included to enhance system resilience, while the PEA network enables validation in a realistic operational environment with varied load types. A penalty factor is applied to discourage excessive switching, promoting a solution that balances effective load restoration with operational simplicity. The framework’s performance is assessed by evaluating the total restored load and the number of required switch operations, demonstrating its effectiveness in enhancing reliability and continuity in both theoretical and real-world distribution networks.
