Mapping GHG emissions from Rice Fields in Vietnamese Mekong Delta with Sentinel 1 and Sentinel 5P Data: A Rule-based Approach in Google Earth Engine
The present study estimates methane (CH<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">4</inf>) emissions from rice cultivation in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD) using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-5P satellite datasets in Google Earth Engine platform. A rule-based classifier was employed to identify seasonal rice-cultivated areas for generating seasonal CH<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">4</inf> emission maps. The initial findings reveal that the upper region of the delta, characterized by deep flooding, is a primary rice-producing area, with the majority of cultivation occurring during the winter-spring season. While CH<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">4</inf> emissions did not exhibit substantial seasonal variations, higher emissions are observed in the deep-flooded zones. This research provides valuable insights into the spatiotemporal dynamics of CH<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">4</inf> emissions (2021-2022) from rice cultivation in the VMD, aiding in developing targeted mitigation strategies to address climate change.
