All-Photonic Fiber-sub-THz System for 5G NR mmW Signal Transmission and Downconversion

We demonstrate an all-photonic fiber-sub-terahertz system for 5G new radio (NR) millimeter-wave signal transmission. Photonic technology is employed for both signal generation and up-conversion at the transmitter and signal reception and downconversion at the receiver. A low-loss broadband optical modulator is employed for direct conversion of sub- THz signal to optical domain, significantly simplifying the receiver at antenna site. We successfully transmitted 5G NR standard-compliant signals at 28 and 39 GHz over the system in the 100-GHz band and achieved satisfactory performance for 64- and 256-QAM signals. The system can be useful for flexible mobile fronthaul/backhaul for transmission of radio access signals in the millimeter-wave band.
