Enhancing Sub-Surface Utility Localization Through Mobile Augmented Reality: a Visual Approach for 3D Phased Study of Construction With Integrated Utility Mapping

In today’s intricate urban infrastructure, pinpointing the exact position of underground utilities often remains uncertain and risky. Construction crews are left relying on outdated maps and rough surveys, which often result in expensive and hazardous accidents. In this study, we present an approach to subsurface utility and as-built construction phases visualization using mobile Augmented Reality (AR) technology. The research presents a thorough framework for recording and visualizing the step-by-step construction of a water fountain, encompassing intricate subsurface utilities like electrical conduits, water pipelines, and control systems. By combining 3D point cloud data captured using low-cost handheld LiDAR sensors, utility identification, and AR visualization, the research offers a practical solution for onsite utility localization. The developed mobile AR application allows construction teams to visualize hidden infrastructure through an easy-to-use interface, improving safety, efficiency, and decision-making during construction and maintenance operations.
